‘Tis the Season for "Gifting"

“My husband gifted me a coat for Christmas.” “My boss gifted us a holiday party.” “I hate the sweater my sister gifted me, so I’m regifting it to my housekeeper.” In the last decade or so, someone decided the verb give did not adequately describe the process of turning something over to someone free of charge, so they started using gift as a verb. But this “new and improved” version really, well, isn’t. According  to Merriam-Webster, give means “to make a present of.” Gift as a noun means “something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation.” Without compensation. Free! Interestingly, M-W does not cite gift in verb tense. …
